Historic St Raphael's Celebrates 60 years on Fort Myers Beach
IN 1951 The Episcopal Diocese of southern Florida gave approval to start an organized mission on the island, and St. Raphael's was born. St Raphael's sixtieth anniversary began with the dedication of the historical plaque in October, and will continue through February 2012. Special anniversary events are being scheduled through February 2012
For more information, contact Bob Bunting @ 850-9293
Many have been able to join in on the celebrations. As stated in the December newsletter a large pre Thanksgiving dinner was held the Sunday before Thanksgiving, and even the Bishop joined the party.

On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2011, the congregation celebrated the 60th anniversary of the first service held at the now historic, St. Raphael's Episcopal Church. On an absolutely beautiful night, members were guided into the church by the soft light of lumminaria.

Members entered the beautifully decorated sanctuary and enjoyed a traditional candle light, Carol Sing. The music selections, presented by Judy Michie, Darrel Bell and Jerry Frantz took us from the beginning of advent to the birth of Jesus. The music was then followed by a traditional Christmas Eve service.
On Christmas morning, Father Don provided a slightly less than traditional service, and utilized the original "Rite 1" service of morning prayer, from The Book of Common Prayer

Both services provided the congregation with a peaceful, spiritual experience for the Christmas Celebration |

THANK YOU FOR YOUR STEWARDSHIP SUPPORT!
Many people ask me how to "join" St. Raphael's. Joining begins with showing up at the services, and offering help and support to the mission of the church. Beginning with the basics. Just as we are responsible to, and for our families, let us be good stewards to and for our family church. St. Raphael's is growing monthly at well over 15%. I think it is time to set a goal of full parish status by 2015. | |

There was also a great Thanksgiving celebration at St. Raphael's. Attitude adjustment began at 5:00 PM, followed by dinner at 6:00. Approximately 38 members and guests enjoyed a huge meal, consisting of two 20 lb. turkeys and "tons" of mashed potatoes, gravy and dressing. Ed Battaglia, on the piano led guests in "God Bless America, followed by Doxology, and prayers and blessings from Fr. Don, and Fr. Comfort. Because of great help from everyone, especially Bob and Ellie Bunting, all were on their way home by 8:00 PM.

The Fort Myers Beach Lion's Club was the first club honored at the October dinner. Other organizations to be honored this year include: the Fort Myers Kiwanis Club, The Estero Island Historic society, and Alcoholics Anonymous.
The Bishop's council continues to struggle with financial requirements of the church. St. Raphael's however, has remained financially stable, and able to pay the bills. Thanks to the generosity of many members, several challenges such as bad electric lines and new pumps have been successfully met. New budgets are being prepared for the upcoming year.
Several holiday programs are being planned: including an Advent program for coffee hour, Christmas decorations. There is a possibility of a Carol sing, and even a New Years Eve event. Stay tuned for more !
Many seasonal and new members are returning to St. Raphael's. According to Judy MIchie "So many of our friends are returning, and it is a joy to see them back, and looking well. We pray that all the new folks we've been meeting will be our "old friends" of the future. "
Judy also shared the following timely thoughts, "it is more blessed to give than to receive...remember God gave us Jesus, Bless his Holy name and Pass it on. "" Do unto others as you would have them do to you. If God gave us Jesus, perhaps we should give ourselves to God.
Merry Christmas and look out year 61!! |

For the reception following the ceremony, the Parish hall was beautifully decorated. Food included fresh fruit, and some traditional favorites: egg salad sandwiches, and Eleanor's crackers with cream cheese, and guava paste.

On Thursday September the 1st the Church suffered a serious electrical problem.
The main electrical panel to the Parish Hall failed. The underground wires to the Parish Hall A/C's (4) burned up.
To repair the problem a new panel was installed and a trench was dug, with new wires installed in conduit. The 4 A/C in the Parish Hall are back working. It also appears the Computer is not coming online. I will have it checked out. I think this is the result of lightning and have filed a claim with the insurance company. But it may be hard to proved as the panel was very old and the wires were buried in the ground for a long.. long time.
Steve Webb, a licensed electrician work a lot time to find the problem as the wires would work for a day or so making trouble shooting a real nightmare. Thank you Dave Saunders for Steve Webb. Truly a great Christian.
Steve's bill, because he knows our shape is only going to be around $2400 for all of his work. Any other company would have been 3500-4000.
We had come so close to making it through the summer with out writing about our financial shape. BUT here is the situation detailed below. Please help as you can, no matter how small.

In observation of this special occasion, Historic St. Raphael's is planning a six month anniversary celebration beginning September 29 when the town of Fort Myers Beach presents the parish with an historic designation plaque to be placed on the church building. The ceremony will take place on Thursday September 29 at 9:00 AM. in the parish hall located at 5601 Williams Drive. SAVE THE DATE
On Sunday, September 11, St. Raphael's honored the event by ringing the bell in the Parish hall eleven times. The recessional followed with the playing of "All Things Bright and Beautiful, reminding the members of much simpler times. The following anonymous poem was submitted by Dean McIntosh. The words really seem to exemplify those values we cherish.
When You Thought I Wasn't Looking Anonymous
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make my favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life.
When you thought I wasn't looking I heard you say a prayer, and I knew there is a God I could always talk to, and I learned to trust in Him.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we have to help take care of each other.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have to take care of what we are given.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw how you handled your responsibilities, and even when you didn't feel good, and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw tears come from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's all right to cry.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you cared, and I wanted to be everything I could be.
When you thought I wasn't looking I learned most of life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and productive person when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn't looking I looked at you and wanted to say. "Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking.
Each of us (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, friend) influences the life of a child.
Live Simply, Love generously, Care deeply, Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God

Celebrations
Dott Bellows was joined by her family to celebrate her 90th Birthday. The following paragraph was written by Dotts family in honor of the event.
"Dorothea, affectionately known as Dott to her many friends, has been a member of St. Raphael's for almost 60 years, and has been an active worker on committees and projects. She brought her five children up in the church, which has significantly benefited each of them in later life. Once her children were in school, Dott reactivated her nursing license, and worked outside the home. She was always active in community projects from serving as president of the local little league, to helping at the church thrift store, and volunteering at the Immokalee soup kitchen. When her parents became too old to live independently, Dott took them into her home to live out their last 30 years. She has always been close, and supportive of her sister and brother and their families.
Dott was married to the same man, Dr./Capt. James Bellows, for 55 years, and was the girl of his dreams for the entire marriage.
By her actions, she taught her children at every opportunity to help others, to be scrupulously honest, to be against prejudice, to have a strong work ethic, and strong family values.
As a wonderful grandmother, she spent many hours filming her grandchildren, even though it meant carrying around a heavy VCR. Her grandchildren delight in her and have many fabulous memories of their time spent with her, putting her well ahead of Mary Poppins. Dott has many wonderful stories about her world travels. She has traveled to many countries and all of the continents except antarctica.
At 90, being a great-grandmother is more taxing, but Dott still has the energy to enjoy holding the babies and playing with the toddlers. In recent years, Dott has faced some serious health issues with fortitude, integrity, amazing spirit, and a wonderful sense of humor. Our lives have truly been enriched by the wisdom, guidance and compassion of our wonderful mother."
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! |

BISHOP'S COUNCIL
The Bishops council is happy to report that because of the generosity of the membership, our financial support continues to be strong. Specifically, the actual money received from pledges for the first half of the year was $18,365. Normally, the contributions for that period, would be $16,560. consequently we are $1805 ahead for the period. We average $3129 per month in pledge contributions during the season. For the off-season we are averaging $2927. The contributions on a regular basis have allowed us to "catch-up", and will allow us to continue focusing on improving our church. All members will receive a letter detailing the financial information, and a report of the individual member's pledges to date. We are very grateful for your continued support of the parish.
Interested visitors, and members are welcome to attend the Bishop's council meetings, the second Wednesday of the month @ 7:00 PM. Likewise, if you are unable to attend, feel free to contact any of the members at any time regarding suggestions and concerns you may have. We would LOVE to hear from you!!

BISHOP'S COUNCIL
The Bishops council has been considering a variety of ways to utilize the church facilities to provide some additional revenue. Some organizations are already using the facility, and the potential exists for others. Options being discussed include, but are not limited to: rental to condominium associations, Bingo, antique and or art shows, as well as some music venues. Any and all of these suggestions would require significant planning, and participation from both full time, and seasonal members. If you have any additional suggestions, or would be interested in participating in any of these activities, please contact Judy Chamberlain@ cjbconsultants@fuse.net. All members of the parish, or interested visitors, are welcome to attend the Bishop's council meetings, the second Wednesday of the month @ 7:00 PM. Likewise, if you are unable to attend, feel free to contact any of the members at any time regarding suggestions and concerns you may have. We would LOVE to hear from you!!
Meet Council Member: Bill Chamberlain
Bill lives in Cincinnati Ohio, but heads to Ft Myers Beach with the first hint of chilly weather. Having attended St. Raphael's for several seasons, as a "Snow Bird", Bill became interested more active participation, as St. Raphael's began a rebuilding process.
Bill is retired from employement with Hamilton county Ohio, where he worked as a supervisor in a variety of "Jobs programs". He also functioned as a full time counselor, and a certified chemical dependency counselor.
Several years of retirement were spent rebuilding a 1954 Austin Healey 100. It was beautiful car, and has since been sold. The only remaining antique car is his 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible, which he purchased off the show room floor. He now likes to spend his time, in the warm sun next to the Gulf of Mexico, go sailing with friends, traveling, and playing his guitar.
A very enjoyable trip last year to Jerusalem added significant meaning to the liturgy of the church, and new dimension to the scripture readings during the services. He hopes to again go with ST. George's college, next spring to follow the path of ST. Paul through Turkey.
As a member of the Bishop's council, Bill would like to focus his energies on the development of new, and on-going, sources of revenue to sustain the growth of St. Raphael's, and provide additional support during the off-season. |

Health, and Healing Eat well, sleep well, and laugh a lot!
June is designated as National Men's Health Month for the purpose of heightening awareness of preventable health problems, and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. With congressional help, Men's Health Month is celebrated with many educational events, health fairs and medical screenings.
Also during June, we honor our fathers by celebrating Father's Day. Show how much you love those special men in your life, by encouraging them to take positive steps in controlling their overall health. Encourage men to see their doctors for routine physical examinations and specific health screens. Some of those required medical screens include, but are not limited to, blood pressure, EKG, a variety of blood tests, prostate and colorectal examinations. Because many of these examinations are age specific, it is important to discuss the requirements with your doctor. Dad, Brother , son! Many folks love you and are dependent upon you, so please, see your family doctor, take charge of your health, and "Git er done" |

Great News to report
St. Raphael's is very much alive and moving forward. Thanks to many members who have dedicated much time and effort. Work has been done to update and beautify the church. Just a few things include: power washing the building, cleaning and removal of old dead brush, as well as, a dead tree. New pumps for the irrigation system have been installed, and the irrigation system malfunctions have been repaired. The building has a wonderful " good-as-new" appearance. Thanks and kudos to David Saunders, and the many folks who have been assisting with these projects.
Members of the congregation were very busy all winter and spring. The shrimp dinners were again highly successful, generally serving over 200 guests. Even the March dinner hosted 192.
A quick garage sale netted $800.00.
Attendance gradually increased over the season, and Easter Sunday enjoyed 72 attendees. Judy Michie treated those folks to shrimp rolls and cakes for lunch.
Year to Date Sunday Morning Attendance 2010 =1032
2011 = 1131

Meet Council Member: Julie Bell
Julie has a long history with St. Raphael's, having been confirmed there in 1967. After a few years of departure, in 1994, Julie returned in August of 2010, with a great deal of energy and enthusiasm, to assist in the rebuilding of her favorite church. Julie lives in San Carlos Park, has two sons, and one grandson. She has spent her career as a teacher of the blind, and has relied on her faith to carry her through some dark days, such as a terrible car crash. Julie quoted an Irish poem when she stated that "God has me in the palm of his hand". What we are is a gift from God. What we become is our gift to God. |

The Healthy Corner
Recent Studies indicate a significant link exists between maintaining a healthy heart, and also maintaining a healthy brain. Stroke, the third leading cause of death, is also the second most common cause of cognitive impairment. It has been demonstrated that even borderline elevated cholesterol levels can increase the risk of dementia, and small areas of brain damage can be cumulative. A recently published long term British study determined that those with poor cardiovascular health also had evidence of greater declines in memory and mental tasks. Prevention magazine cites 8 basic steps to lower one's risk of heart disease.
Improve cholesterol levels
Quit smoking
Control high blood pressure
Exercise
Keep diabetes under control
Maintain a healthy weight
Limit alcohol consumption
Manage your stress level
Controlling those risk factors not only helps our heart, but also maintains a natural supply of oxygen to the brain. Those healthy behaviors of diet and exercise not only affect our physical health, but also have a significant impact on mental function. It is no longer necessary to accept cognitive decline as inevitable.

Blessing of the Fleet
This year, in order to accommodate Bishop Smith's schedule, the Blessing of the Fleet will be held in conjunction with the Lion's Shrimp Festival on Sunday, March 13.
Initially, the Blessing of the Fleet was held on the Sunday after the Edison Festival of Light Parade in Fort Myers. This is generally held in mid-February.
Historic St. Raphael's Church sponsored the Blessing, which was held on the Beach Pier. We also sold Shrimp Rolls in the County Park before and after the Blessing. For many years, the Shrimp Festival was held on the weekend nearest the full moon after the Edison Festival because the shrimp fleet was in port. The Lion's moved their festival to the second weekend in March to make the scheduling of events easier. This year, we will be coordinating with their club, and will have our Blessing of the Fleet on Sunday, March 13. If we have enough people willing to work, shrimp rolls may also be sold on that day. |

Christmas Eve
Over 50 people attended the Christmas Eve midnight service enjoying singing and communion to usher in Christmas Day. Special thanks to Julie and Darrel Bell and Judy Michie for leading the congregation in the carol sing. Jerry Frantz on piano was wonderful as always. Our soloist, Robert Beane, a real treat. The church looked beautiful with the greens, candles, and poinsettias. Thanks to all who helped making and hanging the greens, especially Bonnie, Paula, Kathleen and other members of the altar guild who made the sanctuary look so beautiful.

Bowl Games
We have a fantastic set up in the parish hall for viewing movies as well as sporting events. The large screen and great sound will rival any set up you might find at your favorite sports bar. Phil is taking requests for which bowl games to show, so if you are a sports fan, just call the church office and leave a message telling what games you would like to see. We will show the ones that get the most votes. The office number is 463-6057. You can also email Bob at robertcbunting@yahoo.com. We have a popcorn machine, so all you need to do is bring whatever you want to drink. We will keep you posted on the game schedule.

Church Finances
We have paid a few bills for December, but as of this writing we only have $950 in the checking account. We still have over $4500 in bills yet to be paid in December.
In an attempt to conserve our limited funds, we have canceled the cleaning service, the pest control service, and the phone service in the rectory. The large dumpster has being replaced by large single cans to save considerable funds each month. Unfortunately, we still have to pay balgas, electric, insurance, and yard service. We have no reserves to pay for any emergencies. We appreciate the generosity of our members who have stepped up to the plate with an increase in giving.
We need your donations to help cover the current ongoing expenses, as well as trying to rebuild the reserves. Please send what you can. Thank you for your help.

Historic Corner There has been some discussion over the date that Historic St. Raphael's was founded. In looking over the records complied by AJ Bassett, Roxie Smith, Tom Winter, and C. Thwing, there are various dates in our history that could be considered our beginning. St. Raphael's was the first denominational congregation on the island holding its first service in 1949. On March 5, 1951, a group of 20 island Episcopalians petitioned the diocese for permission to organize a mission. The congregation was designated a mission in 1953. The land for the church was conveyed to the Diocese of South Florida in 1952. On November 8, 1956, the Diocese transferred the property to the Church by a Deed of Conveyance. The church building was completed in 1953, and the first service was held on December 20, 1953 in the unfinished building. The building was formally consecrated as an Episcopal mission with 42 communicants on January 31, 1954. St. Raphael's became a parish on October 16, 1966. It seems that 1951 is the date most agree is correct.

All bills paid for November with $2096.60 available for ongoing expenses.
WE HAVE NO RESERVES. Monthly Expenses are projected at $6500 per month.

We realize that this is not the best time of the year to find people to help out around the church. Many people are on vacation or have not returned for the season. Right now we are asking for volunteers to help us prepare the bulletin, serve at the altar, and assist Judy with coffee hour.

This Past Sunday, October 17th, Canon Michael Durning did officially install Father Don as Vicar of Saint Raphael's Church.
As always Canon Durning delivered a most inspirational and interesting Sermon.
"As it was in the beginning" Did you realize that our Saint Raphaels's mission was one of the 1st nine in all of SW Florida? Tampa Southward.
"Is now" Exactly where we are, under pressure but alive and well. With a truly great congregation, headed up by an experienced Vicar.
"And ever shall be" With hard work, (everyone pitching in) sound Christian beliefs and actions we can grow this congregation. * Reread Who are we?, below.
Judy Michie put on a GREAT brunch following the installation of Fr Don. 6 types of quiche, Fruit, desert. Thank You Judy, for your service and of your helpers.
Pictures on Web Site soon.

We have paid all bills due for August and September some for October for a total of $11737. So we have $2650 in the Bank for Balance of October. Expenses are projected at $4500 per month.
In an attempt to conserve our limited funds, we have canceled the cleaning service, the pest control service, and the phone service in the rectory. The large dumpster is being replaced by large single cans to save considerable funds each month. Unfortunately, we still have to pay balgas, electric, insurance, and yard service. We have no reserves to pay for any emergencies. We appreciate the generosity of our members who have stepped up to the plate with an increase in giving. Our bank account is looking better, but we are by no means healthy financially.
We need your donations to help cover the current ongoing expenses, as well as trying to rebuild the reserves. Please send what you can. Thank you for your help.
You may also go to our website and Donate securely, using your credit or debit card.
We realize that this is not the best time of the year to find people to help out around the church. Many people are on vacation or have not returned for the season. Right now we are asking for volunteers to help us prepare the bulletin, serve at the altar, and assist Judy with coffee hour.

Our Vicar, Rev. Don Nicholson will be Blessing the remander of the fleet at the Shrimp Docks on Sunday March 20th. |

On Sunday, September 26, Father Don celebrated mass for a congregation of about twenty members and visitors. During his sermon, Fr Don reminded the parishioners that Raf means "healing" and the ael means "God." This should prove comforting to us as we begin our journey to rebuild our Saint Raphael's Church. Many people have been hurt, and we need to pull together as we work through the healing process and start fresh.
After gathering input from the members who were in attendance last week, the Bishop's Committee has decided to keep the Sunday Service at 10:00 AM.

The church, the parish hall, and the grounds looked really nice after a successful work day on Saturday. Many thanks to those who gave up their free day to help out. More of these days will be put on the calendar. We have quite a bit of maintenance that needs to be done. We will be putting HELP WANTED cards on the bulletin board in the parish hall. Feel free to grab a card and complete the task when you have a free minute. None of these are huge jobs, so if everyone chips in, we should be in good shape by season.

Sunday September 19th.
It was, as always a pleasure listening to Father Don. He surely make things easier to under stand. Sunday's lesson was about Paul's Letter to Timothy. Concerning growing the Church. A real parallel to what we at Saint Raphaels's are going through.
We need to remember Prayer, Meditation and Study, that is the key.
If you haven't heard Fr Don yet, you are in for a real treat. Hope to see you soon.

THE REV. DON NICHOLSON
After the brunch on Sunday, Bishop Smith met with the Bishop's Committee. After careful consideration, and the recommendation of Bishop Smith, the committee decided to ask Rev. Don Nicholson if he would be interested in serving as our Vicar. On Sunday, he agreed to serve with the blessings of Bishop Smith.
On Thursday of this week, the committee will meet with Fr. Don to work out the details. We are pleased to have him aboard and are looking forward to moving ahead with plans to rebuild our parish under his guidance.
As you know, Fr. Don has been with us for the past three Sundays helping out. Fr. Don comes from Brandenton where he was serving as Chaplain at Manatee College. Since his retirement, Fr. Don has been answering the call to be Interim pastor at various churches in the area who were in need of someone to lead them while they searched for a permanent rector. Fr. Don will be staying at the rectory for the three to four days per week he will be on the island. In addition to celebrating on Sundays, Fr. Don plans to attend the Beach Ministerial Association meetings and to represent St. Raphaels at all Deanery and Diocesean functions.

One of our surprise guests at the service was Rev. Alex Comfort, his wife, Ana Lee and his daughters, Kathy and Grace. Father Comfort was the very first rector at St. Raphael's and served for many years as our rector. He lives on Pine Island but made the trip over to our island to show his support and visit all of his old friends at St. Raphael's. Two other old friends who made an even longer trip south from Lakeland were George and Naomi Stansbury who were joined by their son George from Naples. Bishop Smith celebrated the Eucharist with Rev. News from Historic St. Raphael's Church
**** Sunday, August 22 The Rev Vincent F Scotto will conduct Mass, as usual at 10 AM. All are welcome to come and Worship.
August 15, was a big day here at Saint Raphael's Episcopal Church.
Before the service began Canon Michael Durning presented the Church with a check for $2500.00 to help tide us over till our members are able to help out. He also told us about a couple of Priests that want to come and conduct Mass. Canon Durning also announced the appointment of Judy Haataja and Paula Babcock to the Bishop's Committee. Both are past members of the Vestry.
When this crisis began on August 1st we were left with only $1440.22 of which we now find out that $1300 of that total was given for the roof repair. Net $140.00 for operating expenses.
We had a donation of $100 for the roof repair this past week, as well as incoming checks from our Church family so ya'll will be glad to know that we now have approximately $7214.00 in the bank. Minus the $1400 for the roof repair leaves $5814 for ongoing expenses.
During the months of June & July this year our average expenses were $9738 per month. We have cut the expensive to the bare bone to approximately $4522 per month.
One of the things that we really have going for us, is that we have no mortgage so in the long term we are healthier than a big Church with a big mortgage.
But now in the short term we need your help. We need your donations to help cover the current ongoing expenses, repair the roof, as well as trying to build the reserves. Please send what you can.

News from Historic St. Raphael’s Church
***** Canon Michael Durning will Celebrate Mass tomorrow the 15th at the usual time. 10AM.
Please join us for this celebration. Also a question answer / Coffee Hour after the Mass. See you here.
On Sunday, August 8, Canon Michael Durning celebrated mass with 20 people in attendance. In his sermon, he asked that we reflect on the Psalm 90:12 which states, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
After the service, Canon Durning met with the parishioners to answer any questions and address any concerns. He assured us that we have the full support of the diocese and that many local clergy will be available to assist us in any way possible. He urged us to remain positive and visible in the community.
The CFO of the Diocese will be examining our financial records and will work with the Bishop’s Committee on all financial matters.
Canon Durning stated that Rev. Marcrum has been suspended by our Bishop and is no longer a representative of the Episcopal Church. He will make sure that Historic St. Raphael’s is represented at the Island Ministry Association and has supply priests to help us through this transition.
After the general meeting, Canon Durning met for a brief time with Phil Babcock, Bob Bunting, and Ellie Bunting, the only remaining committee members. He stated that the Bishop will appoint a Senior Warden and will appoint two more committee members. Our financial situation will not be completely clear until the CFO has had a chance to examine the records. From looking at the records, it appears that most of the bills are up to date. The present council has prepared a rough budget to get us through November. All unnecessary expenses are being cut and all present service contracts are being examined carefully.
We took in over $1,000 yesterday, which will help considerably, and we have another $1,000 coming in from people who are out of town. Right now, building up our finances is vitally important. The council is looking at a 13th month campaign to raise money to help pay the bills. The roof fund was supposed to have about $1300 in it, but we are not sure where this money was recorded. We will need $3000 to fix the leak in the church roof.
We appreciate the rapid support we have received from everyone in the diocese. Also from local Clergy. Canon Durning urged us to move ahead but not to panic. The Bishop is in charge right now, and the present council is being advised not to make any personnel changes at this time. We will keep you posted through emails and our new website.
Thank You for Your Thoughts, Prayers and Financial Support for OUR Historic Church.

Update From St. Raphael's
What a wonderful day at our Historic and Original Saint Raphael's Church here on Fort Myers Beach.
Thank you Canon Durning and his wife Bonnie for coming down and reassuring us about the future of Saint Raphael's.
Also thanks goes out to those who joined us for the 10AM Mass. It was a great turnout. It is all good news going forward. I will post the complete report as soon as I receive, but I know many wanted to hear something ASAP. -Phil-
The Rev. Canon Michael P. Durning will conduct services on Sunday, August 8 at 10:00 AM.
****** Rev. Canon Durning will join us at coffie hour for Q & A ******
Father During will be meeting with the Council to discuss the reorganization of our parish since the resignation of our priest, Alice Marcrum; our Senior Warden, Roxie Smith; our treasurer, Betty Goodacre, and three members of the Council, Pat McIntosh, Sue Egony, and Hazel Analuf. All resigned on August 1.
Bishop Smith has spoken with Junior Warden, Bob Bunting, on more than one occasion since last Sunday and has assured us that we have the full support of the Diocese as we begin rebuilding our church.
Canon Durning has also spoken to Bob, and he is fully aware of our present situation, and will be here to guide us through this difficult period. We appreciate all of the calls and emails we have received from those of you who care deeply for St. Raphael's. We ask that you be patient until the Council has had an opportunity to sit down with Cannon Durning to take a careful look at the Parish records and to make a plan for the reorganization.
We will keep you informed as we work through this process.
Financial report will be posted today. (only $1440.22 in the bank)
Saint Raphael's needs your thoughts, prayers and financial support, as we begin the rebuilding process.
Yours In Christ

As you may be aware Rev Alice Marcrum, with out prior notification has voluntarily, resigned from Saint Raphael's Episcopal Church effective Sunday July 31st. She has started a new church, Saint Raphael's by the Sea Church. An Anglican Church. Roxie Smith and Betty Goodacre have also resigned their positions. We wish them well.
It seems that we did not own, our web site and it also has left. But we have secured the web site name SaintRaphaelsChurch.org and it should be up and operating soon. Details to follow.
The Right Reverend Bishop Smith is working with Bob Bunting and Phil Babcock, and is committed to Saint Raphael's Church. Bishop Smith was also caught off guard by this change, but has assured us that we will have a Priest available this and each Sunday in the future.
Saint Raphael's Episcopal Church is active, and will continue holding services on this and following Sundays at 10AM. We hope you will join us.
When we were finally given passwords, Tuesday August 3rd, to enter the computer, we found out that there was only $1440.22 in the bank. Complete Financial information will be up loaded to the Financial information page very soon.
Please keep Saint Raphael's in your prayers.
Yours In Christ
